• Title: Show me the data! A look at real-world clinical performance and outcomes of liquid biopsy testing for cancer detection in 1,500 dogs
• Speaker: Andi Flory, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), PetDx Chief Medical Officer
• Program Description: Blood-based liquid biopsy testing using next-generation sequencing for cancer detection in dogs became clinically available in May 2021. Since that time, the test has been ordered for thousands of patients, primarily as a screening tool for dogs at higher risk of cancer, and as an aid in diagnosis for dogs for which there is a clinical suspicion of cancer. This session will review data from a recent study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) which analyzed a cohort of 1,500 consecutive liquid biopsy tests received for commercial testing at one clinical laboratory. The lecture will include a discussion of ordering patterns, positivity rates, and patient outcome data, to examine how liquid biopsy is being used in real-world clinical practice.

• Program Description: “Will the bloodwork tell if my dog has cancer?” Most of us receive this question from owners on a regular basis, but until recently, no such test existed. In 2021, liquid biopsy “the blood test for cancer” became a reality. This session will explore how 30 different types of cancer can now be detected using a simple blood draw, and how this technology is being used in clinical practices around the country. A real-world case study will be used to help tell the story.

• Title: Cancer detection in 2023: Can a blood test really find cancer?

• Program Description: It’s Friday afternoon and you’re about to head home for the weekend. A dog is rushed in with a hemoabdomen. The owner says, “he was fine this morning”; now, Friday evening, it’s clear that your patient has ruptured hemangiosarcoma, and the family needs to make a quick and difficult decision to head to surgery. Today, most cancers are detected after a dog develops clinical signs (sometimes subtle, sometimes life-threatening) and the disease is advanced. But what if there was a way to detect cancer earlier, before that dog is sick, at a time when the family has more options for treatment? That is the goal of blood-based liquid biopsy testing for earlier detection. This session will provide an overview of how “the blood test for cancer” works, and how this new technology has an opportunity to change those heartbreaking “Friday afternoon” emergencies.
