Introduction to “the blood test for cancer” – for Vet Techs
Cancer is a big problem in dogs – in fact, it’s the number one cause of death in adult dogs. Unfortunately, most cancers are detected after a dog becomes sick, and the disease is advanced. But times are changing. In humans, we know that routine cancer screening (using tools like mammograms and colonoscopies) can save lives – by detecting cancer early – at a time when the disease is most treatable. In dogs, a new cancer screening tool has the potential to improve early cancer detection when added to a dog’s wellness exam – and all it takes is a simple blood draw. This session will provide an overview of the basic principles of liquid biopsy (“the blood test for cancer”), case studies illustrating how this testing is being used in clinics across the country, and a discussion about why veterinary technicians are so important in the quest to make earlier detection of cancer a reality for dogs and their families.
