Liquid biopsy for post-treatment cancer monitoring in dogs
After a dog is diagnosed with cancer and receives therapy, the current standard of care relies heavily on physical exam and imaging to assess disease status and monitor for cancer recurrence. However, these tools may not be sensitive enough to detect the presence of residual disease following excisional surgery, or to detect early evidence of cancer recurrence following therapeutic intervention. Blood-based liquid biopsy, a clinically validated test for cancer detection, may provide value as a new, noninvasive tool to support post-diagnosis monitoring of cancer in dogs. This session will review the performance of a next-generation sequencing-based liquid biopsy test for detection of residual disease and cancer recurrence following treatment. Case studies demonstrating the use of liquid biopsy in a post-diagnosis setting will be presented.
