FREEA new era in cancer detection: Incorporating “liquid biopsy” testing into your practice
Overview
The idea that a single blood test could detect 30 different types of cancer may have seemed far-fetched a few short years ago; however, “liquid biopsy” testing now offers veterinarians a non-invasive option for cancer detection using a simple blood draw. This session will provide an overview of how next-generation sequencing can be used to detect cancer-associated genomic alterations in the blood of dogs. The clinical validation data from over 1,000 dogs will be presented, along with a review of how test performance (sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values) can be interpreted and explained to help pet parents understand what a positive or negative liquid biopsy result really means for their dog. The session will conclude with a series of interesting case studies demonstrating the potential utility of this test as a screening tool for healthy dogs and as an aid-in-diagnosis for dogs suspected to have cancer.
Learning Objectives
- Define “liquid biopsy” and examine how advanced genomic technologies can be used to identify cancer-associated genomic alterations in the blood of dogs.
- Review test performance metrics such as sensitivity and specificity and determine positive and negative predictive values to help you understand your patient’s liquid biopsy results.
- Identify real-world opportunities for liquid biopsy incorporation into routine wellness exams or as an aid-in-diagnosis when cancer is on the list of differential diagnoses.
